Charlie Sheen went on the Today show this morning and revealed that he is HIV-positive in a live interview with Matt Lauer. The actor said he was diagnosed with the disease four years ago after enduring “insane migraines” that he initially believed to be a brain tumor.
Part of Charlie’s reason for speaking out now, he said, was to stop being a victim of extortion. The actor said he’s paid millions of dollars to prevent people from revealing that he's HIV-positive. “That is money taken away from my kids,” he said.
Having admitted to serious drug use and hiring prostitutes over the years, Charlie said he believes he has not transmitted the disease to anyone else. His ex-wives, Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller, have known about his HIV-positive status for years, and he explained that he told his eldest daughter Cassandra Esteves, who is 30 years old, prior to today's interview.
"I said, 'Sweetie, I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, but it didn’t seem like you could do anything for me, and I didn’t want to burden you with the stress. But she was a rock star about it."
