A daycare worker has been charged with fatally assaulting an infant while she was napping. According to CBS News, Leah Walden of Baltimore, Maryland has been charged in the death of 8-month-old Reese Bowman.
Per a police statement, authorities received a report that an infant was not breathing at Rocket Tiers Learning Center. Emergency services came to the daycare and tried performing CPR. The infant was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Authorities believe that 23-year-old Walden assaulted the infant while she was napping and the resulting injuries caused her death.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Col. Stanley Brandford shared that Walden—who has worked at the facility for two-and-a-half years— said that she fed the infant, wrapped her with a blanket, and put her down for her nap.
But police say video camera footage contradicts that. Col. Brandford says video footage shows the caretaker covering Bowman with "excessive blankets, which fully covered the child's head, violently snatching the child out of the crib with one arm, swinging at the baby as if she was slapping her, and placing pillows over the baby's face."
The infant's family released a statement: "Our hearts are broken. No family should ever have to experience the loss of a child under any circumstances. We await further information from the unfolding investigation."
Walden has been charged with first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, second-degree child abuse and reckless endangerment.
