Entire Internet Was On The Edge Of Its Seat Watching 173-Passenger Plane Fly Straight Into Hurricane Irma

"DL431 is going for it."

A Delta commercial airplane, the last one to fly out of Puerto Rico’s San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport on Wednesday afternoon before the airport shut down, flew right into Hurricane Irma. Thousands of people on Twitter watched the horrifying moment the plane flew toward the core of the category 5 storm in real time after aviation fan Jason Rabinowitz tweeted the plane’s trajectory, according to PEOPLE.

In the end, all 173 passengers were safe and Delta maintains their pilots had everything under control the entire time.

“Our meteorology team is the best in the business,” Erik Snell, vice president for Delta operations and customer center, told the Washington Post. “They took a hard look at the weather data and the track of the storm and worked with the flight crew and dispatcher to agree it was safe to operate the flight.”
