Kindergarten Teacher Kidnapped 16-Year-Old Teen To Create Child Porn

“I was trying to help a young lady that I fell in love with, that I still love,” he said about the teen who was held captive in his apartment for two months.

A former Las Vegas kindergarten teacher was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for kidnapping a teen girl and creating child pornography with her while she was held captive in his apartment for two months.

Melvyn Sprowson, 48, pleaded not guilty but was convicted of kidnapping and child pornography charges.

He represented himself and told the judge that he still loved the 16-year-old he kidnapped.

“This is an issue of age of consent. This is not an issue of me being a criminal and having criminal intent,” Sprowson said in court, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “One day I will die, and I will wake up in the arms of Jesus. That is my sole consolation in this whole process. The Lord knows what happened. I have a clear conscious before God.”

Handcuffed inmates present in the courtroom scoffed, laughed and shook their heads as Sprowson made that comment.

“I was trying to help a young lady that I fell in love with, that I still love.”

Sprowson met the teen through a Craigslist ad he posted in August 2013, reported CBS8 Las Vegas.

Prosecutors alleged that he asked the victim to send him photos of her wearing little clothing before they met up.

While she was in Sprowson’s home, the girl had no contact with her family. When he did take her outside, he made her wear baggy clothes and a baseball cap to conceal her identity, according to CBS8. Missing posters of the teen were all over the news and community at the time.

“The idea of her running away was not mine,” Sprowson said. “My mistake was I allowed her to come and stay with me.”

Sprowson told the judge he plans to appeal, according to NBC3 News Las Vegas.
