A Hornell, New York man has been sentenced to at least 25 years in state prison on Tuesday for biting and beating his girlfriend’s toddler to death.
Dakota Miller, 23, was found guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter back in June for intentionally causing the death of 18-month-old Ian Maniske-Huff on Thanksgiving Day 2015, the Star Gazette reports.
Miller and Ian’s mother, Codie Baker, brought the unresponsive boy to the hospital. He was bleeding and full of bruises and human bite marks. Soon after he was pronounced dead.
Miller admitted to biting Ian and told police that he "probably bit him too hard,” according to the Star Gazette. At the time of the killing, Codie Baker was pregnant with Miller's son, according to My Twin Tiers. That boy is now 19 months old.
"This was one of the most heinous crimes I’ve ever been in contact with," Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker said. "We watched trial-hardened state police investigators become emotional. Emergency room doctors cried on the stand. The level of beating this poor child suffered — there are no words for it. It escapes reason and comprehension."
Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker said he hopes that Miller never gets released from prison.
“He’s a violent individual," he told the Star Gazette. "The only way to keep the community safe from someone like him is to keep him locked up forever."
