A Vermont teen is missing and police believe she could be with a convicted sex offender.
According to a Vermont State Police press release, Mickayla Lozell, 16, was reported missing by her mother on Sunday night and was last seen leaving her home on foot with a backpack at about 5pm that day. She is a ward of the state, but was living with her mother when she went missing, police say.
Authorities say the investigation has revealed that Mickayla may be with 47-year-old William Smith, who is a registered sex offender in Vermont. Officials say Smith has not been compliant with his requirements as a sex offender and police are pursuing an arrest warrant for his non-compliance.
The press release states that on June 6 Mickayla contacted an acquaintance by phone and said she was okay and in New Hampshire. Investigators believe she may be there with Smith, possibly in the Concord or Hampton Beach areas.
The investigation revealed that Mickayla was previously in contact with Smith in recent weeks.
Authorities say Smith is likely driving a gold colored Dodge Intrepid with Vermont license plate GRK 282. Vermont State Police has received multiple tips and sightings of this vehicle in the southern New Hampshire region.
"Knowing who she is with, we have stepped up the investigation," Lt. Lance Burnham said to MyNBC5. "We have a number of detectives to assist in locating her. We've been working hand-in-hand with the road troopers in uniform. We've been knocking on a lot of doors, speaking to a lot of people trying to locate Mickayla."
Anyone who sees the car or Smith is to contact police immediately at 802-524-5993.
