Police are now investigating an attack on transgender teen Dakota Kern which occurred in Phoenix, Arizona.
Video of the attack was shared on social media, according to AZ Family.
Kern was at a pool party with friends and strangers before others at the spot began shouting gay slurs at her. As she was leaving, she heard a man scream "Get it, get it!" before being assaulted by a mob of 20 people.
“Then one of the guys, he ends up grabbing me by my head, grabbing me by my hair and then he hit me a few times,” says Kern.
Video of the scene, which was disseminated on the internet, depicts Kern being shoved to the ground and kicked repeatedly.
“I passed out, hit my head on the concrete,” says Kern. “My friend was above me like slapping my face like ‘hey, come on come on, get up so we can go.’”
Kern now believes she was lured to the pool with the assault in mind.
Police say their bias crime units are now investigating the situation but there is no word on whether the situation is officially being considered a hate crime. Those with more information are being urged to call the police.
This year has proven to be a particularly deadly year for LGBTQ people, with anti-LGBTQ crimes currently on the rise. At least 17 trans women have already been murdered this year.
