A video shows what multiple cheerleaders at a Denver high school were forced to endure: being held down and forced into splits. Featured in the video is an incoming freshman, 13-year-old Ally Wakefield. She is seen crying and screaming as she is forced by teammates and the coach to go into an extended split. Wakefield repeatedly begged for it to stop.
The incident took place in June, in just the first week of cheer camp.
Wakefield’s mother, Kirsten Wakefield, told CBS News that she was "horrified" when she saw the footage.
"My daughter showed them to me while I was driving… I almost hit a car and ran off the road."
She said that her daughter suffered an injury from the incident and is now in physical therapy.
“It caused her muscle tissue to tear and her ligaments, as well as pulling a hamstring.”
The coach, Ozell Williams, told a local newspaper the videos were taken out of context. He said it was all part of normal splits training.
According to NBC affiliate K5, police are investigating the incidents. Williams, as well as the assistant cheer coach, high school principal, assistant principal and Denver Public Schools deputy general counsel have all been placed on leave.
School administrators were reportedly given at least one of the videos in June.
