New York Town Mayor Arrested After Cops Find Child Porn In Home Search

He's faced similar charges in the past.

Rick Nelson, mayor of the town of Stillwater, New York, has resigned from his position after being arrested for possession of child porn, according to NBC New York.

The Computer Crimes Unit began investigating the mayor after noting child porn downloads from an IP address in Stillwater. A warrant was obtained and Nelson's house was searched, leading to his apprehension.

Nelson had promised to "walk a path of rebirth and new beginnings," when he ran for mayor in 2015. He had been a member, deacon, and officer in the local Stillwater United Church.

Nelson has since been replaced by a temporary mayor.

“This has been an incredibly difficult day for the Village of Stillwater and we’re certainly going to be facing some challenging times ahead,” Deputy Mayor Frank Tatum wrote on the town’s website. “But we are a very dedicated group and I am confident that we will get past this.”

Nelson was arraigned and remanded on a $50,000 bond. He posted $25,000 and was released. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday. His official charges are one felony count each of promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing a sexual performance by a child.

The Times Union notes that Nelson has faced similar charges in the past. Three decades ago, he was charged with sexual misconduct, sex abuse, and rape of three teenage girls (one of whom was developmentally disabled). Two of those incidents occurred while Nelson was employed as a bus driver for Stillwater school district. He was acquitted of those charges.

Later, he would be accused of having inappropriate contact with a 5-year-old on a bus. The child was moved to another bus and Nelson had a discplinary note placed in his file.

"Village will continue to move forward despite arrest of the mayor," said officials in a statement.

Jezebel notes that Nelson’s son, Patrick, is currently running for congress.
