Parents Charged After 8-Year-Old Son Apparently Overdosed On Heroin

Medical responders found heroin hidden in a toy in the child's sock.

Two Ohio parents are accused of endangering their 8-year-old son after he was found unconscious with heroin in his system, a local NBC station reported.

Charles Dowdy, 32, and Danielle Simko, 31, were both arrested after the Jan. 11 incident, when Dowdy noticed his son’s lips turning blue as he stopped breathing. Dowdy gave the boy chest compressions, returning a pulse to his son, until emergency responders arrived at the scene, according to a police report.

Doctors were able to save the boy’s life, but a drug test revealed that he had heroin in his system.

Authorities allegedly found drugs hidden inside a toy in one of the boy’s socks, and police found drugs and needles in the parents’ home. Cleveland.com reported that Dowdy admitted to using drugs earlier that day.

The boy is now living with his grandparents. Dowdy and Simko have both pleaded not guilty to the charges, People reported. The pair is scheduled to appear in court today.
