Pedophile Priest Arrested For Child Pornography

The priest was caught in possession of children's underwear and hundreds of videos depicting minors.

Police say the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago sent a child porn-loving priest to a rehab center in another state when police say he should have been facing the music in the Windy City. They also claim agents within the church were slow to act after allegations of his fondness for kiddie porn first came to light. Rev. Octavio Munoz, 40, was found to be in possession of “hundreds of DVDs (and) VHS tapes that appear to depict minors" engaged in sexual activity, as well as children’s underwear, according to Assistant State's attorney Guy Lisuzzo.

Prior to his arrest, Octavio Munoz had an illustrious career in the Catholic Church. From 2009 to 2015, he was the director of Casa Jesus, an outreach program that tries to recruit Latin American men into the priesthood. In July 2015 he was made pastor of St. Pancratius’ Church. An employee of the Archdiocese was showing Munoz’s replacement at Casa Jesus his living quarters when a computer was discovered that was playing a web cam of a young boy masturbating. The employee notified church officials a week later, after Munoz’s successor failed to do so. Rather than immediately notifying police, the Archdiocese only did so after their own internal investigation discovered pornographic videos of minors on various electronic devices owned by Munoz.

The Chicago Archdiocese then moved Munoz to the Saint Luke Institute in Silver Spring, Maryland, a mental health facility and treatment center, without telling the police. The institute specializes in treating members of the Catholic clergy and has come under criticism for treating perpetrators of child sexual abuse. When told of his treatment, Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil – who handled the priest’s arraignment after his arrest - pointedly asked, "Isn't there counseling in the state of Illinois that he could've been afforded?" Munoz has been charged with one felony count for possessing two videos depicting boys in sex acts, however, more charges are expected as police continue to investigate. His bail was set at $50,000 and if convicted he could face up to seven years in prison.
