‘Principal of the Year’ Accused In Statutory Rape Of 16-Year-Old Cheerleader

A Missouri high school principal was arrested this week for the statutory rape of a 16-year-old student of his nearly 20 years ago, police said, according to People magazine.

Matthew Lindsey, 48, had sex with a female cheerleader about 20 times between October 1997 and May 1998, authorities said, when the student was 16 and Lindsey was 29. In that time, Lindsey was the assistant principal and athletic director, who befriended the cheerleader when they would sit together on the bus to out-of-town basketball games.

Lindsey asked the cheerleader if she did “deliveries” at the pizza place where she worked, and like that the two began an affair.

The victim told police that a fellow classmate knew at the time about the relationship. The classmate confirmed to police that she drove the victim to the vice principal’s house on more than one occasion.

“To me, it is important that kids are protected,” prosecutor Camille Johnston said to the Kansas City Star. “So if this happened 20 years ago, it could possibly be happening now. I just want to make sure that our schools are safe, so that is why I went ahead and prosecuted it at this point.”

Lindsey, who is married, was led out of Winnetonka High School in handcuffs on Wednesday for the allegations. In 2015, the Greater Kansas City Missouri Principal’s Association called him its “principal of the year.”
