Teen Girl Shot By Brother After Giving Him A Birthday Hug

Boy's father: “As far as him being charged with her death, I don’t agree with it because he’s been punished enough by the fact that he knows what he did."

A 13-year-old girl died after being shot accidentally by her brother. According to the ABC Local 10, 17-year-old Martaevious Santiago of Florida City accidentally shot his sister after she gave him a birthday hug.

Teddra King hugged her brother at their home Tuesday night. When she walked away, Santiago reportedly pointed the gun at the back of her head and pulled the trigger.

He is now charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and possession of a weapon. His friend, who is 14 years old, was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.

“I know from the bottom of my heart that he loved his sister and that he would never do anything to his sister intentionally,” said King's father per CBS News. He hopes authorities show mercy on Santiago. “As far as him being charged with her death, I don’t agree with it because he’s been punished enough by the fact that he knows what he did."

Santiago is scheduled for a hearing in court on May 17.
