The Mexican Transit System Installed A Seat With A Penis To Combat Sexual Harassment

Trying to beat men at their own game.

A seat on Mexico City’s STC metro system has gone viral for its graphic shape, according to The Washington Post. With a sign above it that reads “For Men Only,” the seat is molded to look like a man’s torso for the back, and for the bottom, things get a little graphic. Let's just say this headless guy didn't wear pants for his daily commute.

If you’re comfortable sitting on a flaccid plastic penis, then you’ll have quite a ride, but a video of men encountering the seat seems to indicate that few are enjoying themselves. Most refuse to sit or cover up the anatomically correct lap with their coats:

The video also appears to be heavily populated with actors, but the transit system isn’t admitting to staging anything. The seat was installed to attract attention to the huge number of women who report sexual violence or harassment on the train in Mexico. A sign on the floor below the seat reads, “It’s annoying to sit here, but doesn’t compare to the sexual violence women suffer on their daily trips.”

It’s an interesting idea, but most women would probably not feel safe from men when there’s a naked sculpture right next to them. It seems like an invitation for guys to talk about sex to strange women even more than they already do.
