After a man in New York may or may not have jumped a turnstile, police got hostile with a handful of bystanders, culminating in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, his girlfriend, and at least one woman who was attempting to de-escalate the situation. The video has been shared more than 80,000 times and viewed more than 2.5 million times.
Police amassed around the couple as the woman became histrionic, voicing her terrified concern as they shuttled her boyfriend to an unknown location. One of the arresting officers claims that at some point she was assaulted, thus (perhaps fallaciously) justifying the girlfriend's arrest as well. Shortly thereafter, a woman who had attempted to negotiate between heated parties was also taken into police custody. Although the situation is certainly tumultuous, it does seem clear that at least the two women taken by police were innocent. It's unclear what they were charged with (if anything) or where the women are now.
The post also prompts viewers to sign a petition against racially prejudicial policing in New York City. "PLEASE STOP THE POLICE FROM ABUSING THEIR AUTHORITY!" reads the petition.
Are police overstepping their bounds on this one?
