A North Carolina police officer is on administrative leave after a video posted on Twitter showed him dramatically slamming a small teenage girl to the ground.
The short video shows the girl being thrown to the ground, where she is motionless for a few seconds, before she is escorted away with her hands behind her back.
A witness to the incident wrote on Twitter that the girl had been trying to break up a fight between her sister and another student in the hallway of Rolesville High School on Jan. 3.
The witness said that the teenage girl left the incident with only minor injuries. But social media posts by her friends afterwards claimed that the slender girl was no more than 5’2, and the video appears to show the police officer swinging her with considerable force.
The ACLU of North Carolina tweeted about the incident soon after it went viral, appearing willing to offer legal help to the victim.
“Disturbing use of force at #RolesvilleHigh that should never be used against kids in schools,” the civil liberties organization tweeted. “Contact us if you have info about incident.”
