A small Georgia community is grieving after the murder of a young brother and sister, who were shot to death during a home invasion Saturday. Daveon Coates, 15, and his 11-year-old sister Tatiyana were home along with several other young children, when an unknown assailant or assailants broke in around 5 in the morning. A 911 call was placed, and when police arrived they found the siblings dead, though thankfully the other children in the house were unharmed. According to authorities, Daveon and Tatiyana’s parents were out “socializing” at the time, but and are not suspects in the investigation.
Jonesboro is a small city of 5,000, about 20 minutes south of Atlanta. Neighbors say the Coates were new to the area and appeared to be a close-knit loving family. Joy Shilengay, who lived nearby, told local NBC affiliate 11 Alive, she often saw the parents playing with their children in front of the house. Police at this time are unsure whether the gunman was alone or had accomplices. They are also not sure of a motive, but are working hard to investigate all possible leads.
