Mom Went To Work After 8-Year-Old Boy Shot His Sister, Prosecutors Say

Alyssa Edwards' son shot her 4-year-old daughter while they were left home alone. After the shooting, Edwards returned home to clean up the mess but then allegedly went back to work.

If your child shot your other child, would you go to work afterward? Well, that’s just what one mother from Hayesville, Ohio did. Prosecutors say that 27-year-old Alyssa Edwards returned to work on Saturday after her 8-year-old son loaded a rifle and shot his 4-year-old sister multiple times, according to The Associated Press.

The mother allegedly came home from work after her son contacted her to let her know that he shot his sister. The children were allegedly left home alone. She tended to her daughter’s injuries and cleaned a bed cover which was full of her blood. After that, she went back to work leaving the children alone again.

Edwards has been jailed on child endangerment charges, according to The Associated Press. Her court-appointed lawyer has declined to comment, according to  CBS News. Edwards’ bond has been set at $30,000.

Her daughter was recovering in the hosptial and expected to be there at least another week, according to CBS station Cleveland 19 News.

The victim’s brother has been put into the custody of children’s services. Christopher R. Tunnell, the prosecuting attorney told Oxygen by way of a press release that he will not seek charges against the boy.

The release states, “an eight-year-old child lacks the capacity to understand the nature of a court proceeding. It is doubtful that an eight year old acts with the necessary mental state to hold him legally culpable."

The release went on to say that "The Ashland County Department of Job and Family Services will develop and implement appropriate interventions to address the needs of this child."
