Target Fires Employee For Putting White Supremacist Cards In Diaper Boxes

The cards included the message, "It's Okay to be white."

Target has axed an employee for slipping white supremacists notes into boxes of diapers that went all across the United States.

The laminate cards featured the message "It's Okay to be white," along with links to neo-Nazi and far-right websites.

One father in Hixson, Tennessee said he found one of the cards inside a Pampers box.

"Diapers come in these two big plastic sleeves. You pull those out, and I noticed something drop and fall," Tad Russell told WRCB-TV in Hixson.

Instead of coupons, he found the white, laminated note.

"I looked on the back and it was just five or six websites...I recognized the language that was used from the Charlottesville incident late last year," he said, referring to the white supremacist rally in Virginia last August that led to the death of a counter-protester.

The Anti-Defamation League said it received two complaints in March from families that found the notes, including one in Washington, D.C.

The phrase "It's okay to be white" is a rallying cry for white supremacist groups, being used as the hashtag #IOKTBW, according to the ADL. It has seen renewed popularity in the past year due to the surge of white supremacist activities in rallies and online.

Target apologized to customers who found the note and said it launched "a thorough investigation" to find the source.

"We have identified the source, and given this is a violation of our policies and our commitment to inclusivity, terminated the team member," the company said in a statement.

Target did not identify the employee and it's not clear how many boxes carried the message. One diaper box that ended up in Florida originated from a facility in Indianapolis.
