We're just hours away from the Sisterhood of Hip Hop preview special (tonight at 8:15 EST! Don't miss it!), so we're celebrating with an exclusive debut of Brianna Perry's new single "I'm That B.I.T.C.H" -- "Beautiful, Intelligent, Tough, Chick in Heels." Yeah!
Sisterhood of Hip Hop star and MC Brianna Perry has received industry nods from Beyonce and Missy Elliot, and is ready to break out with her upcoming debut album. Her style is typically in your face and no BS, so "I'm That B.I.T.C.H" is a glimpse of Brianna's softer side. Well, sort of. It's still a song about female empowerment, sass, and moving up in the world without a man's help. As you'll learn in Sisterhood of Hip Hop, premiering August 12 at 9/8c, Brianna Perry definitely typifies that B.I.T.C.H as she juggles a hip hop and an academic career.

What’s the inspiration behind the song “I’m That B.I.T.C.H”?
I’m that BITCH: Beautiful, Intelligent, Tough, Chick in Heels. I just wanted to take a different stance this time. This single, I did a different style of music than people are used to hearing from me, with the tone in my voice and everything. I’m not so in-your-face. My wordplay is crazy and in this record, I’m really letting you have it. I’m that bitch!
What about the negative connotation around the word “bitch”?
It has such a negative connotation around the word sometimes and it’s used too frequently. I just wanted to give the girls who feel like they’re classy and they’re intelligent and they’re sassy, a right to use the word in a positive way.
When you go into the studio to record a song like this, how do you get into that confident, assertive frame of mind?
That girl is me too. I know how to turn it on and off. In the studio, I just turn it on. I come to life. When I get on the mic, the beast just comes to life. It comes out. I’m that girl. I know how to be cordial but I also know how to be a boss. That balance helps me a lot in my music.
When you turn it on, do you have an onstage alter-ego (like Beyonce has “Sasha Fierce”)?
Yes. I think I do! I think every artist has an alter-ego. You must. Music is a form of entertainment. I don’t think anyone walks around 24/7 “The Artist”. I would definitely say that I have an alter-ego. You see it. It’s two totally different personas.
Is “I’m That Bitch” indicative of the direction of your debut album?
Yeah. This record shows a lot of growth for me and me coming into my own and becoming a young woman. The record has meaning behind it. My entire body of work has that. You don’t really need a man for anything. You can still be that bitch and not be slutty with it. You don’t have to have all of your clothes off. You can be that girl who is going to school to get her degree. You can be a working woman. You can be so many things and still declare, “I’m that bitch.” A generation of women moving forward and still embracing their sexuality and femininity and still being a boss.
