Sharon Martin: Why Did Jodi Tolerate the "Whore" Text Messages?

'Snapped' Producer and Narrator Sharon Martin blogs daily leading up to the two-part special event on Jodi Arias airing Sunday, Dec. 15 at 9/8c and Monday, Dec. 16 at 10/9c.

The trial of Jodi Arias put a bright spotlight on the very personal details of her relationship with Travis Alexander. Judging from interviews with his friends, it was clear that Travis never saw Jodi as marriage material.  However, Jodi seemed much more invested in their relationship.  That’s not a new story: he’s just not that into her. But what stood out to me was a text message that came out during the trial.  In it, Travis says, “You will rejoice in being my whore that’s sole purpose in life is to be mine for animalistic sex.”

It struck me as a horrible thing to say to any woman. Personally, I would be beyond angry if anyone sent me a text like that! Of course, nothing he said could justify what she did, but it made me wonder about Jodi’s self-esteem and what kind of relationship she thought this was.

[embed:render:file:24066:full]He used the word again in an angry series of texts less than two weeks before his murder, and this time he's clearly using it to hurt her. He says her previous comment “makes her look like a pure whore, even more to the people who know you.”  This time, the "whore" trope isn’t something to “rejoice in.” He wants to make it clear to her how little he thinks of her.

Which, again, makes you wonder about Jodi. Why did she sleep with him again after he talked to her like that?  Why did she tell people she wanted to marry him? Why did she take nude photos with him?  Was she obsessed? Was she okay with being his “pure whore.” Maybe she thought it was better than nothing at all.

Or...at that point, was she angry and determined to kill him?  In that same exchange just weeks before his death, Travis calls her “the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.”   Unfortunately, he had no idea how true that would be.
