Glee Recap: Episode 7 - The Substitute

Shelly recaps what happened in Episode 7 of Glee. This week's episode of Glee made it obvious that Sue will stop at nothing to make it to the top, which, if you've been following along, shouldn't come as surprise. She goes so far as to use a WMHS student to spread illness to Figgins and Will, rendering them unfit to keep up their positions at the school.

Will attempts to conduct New Directions rehearsal, but is clearly too ill to when he turns around and hallucinates that his Glee clubbers have become toddler versions of themselves (so adorable, by the way!). This gets him sent home, and while he's gone sick, new substitute teacher Holly Holiday (Gwyneth Paltrow) steps in to teach his Spanish class.

In Will's absence, Rachel obnoxiously attempts to take over Glee club, which prompts Kurt to ask Ms. Holiday to teach them instead. She obliges, instantly winning them over with her version of Cee Lo's "Forget You." She's not only the coolest sub I've ever seen; she also has the voice and the moves to rival those of Mr. Schue.

While Will's at home sick, his ex-wife Terri comes over to take care of him, trying to rekindle old flames. In a moment of weakness, Will gives in, but later regrets this and tells Terri that they're done for good. Is this the last we'll see of Jessalyn Gilsig? Something tells me no, but we'll have to wait to find out.

Some good does come out of Will's time at home, though. In his feverish haze, he dreams that he and Mike Chang do an amazing dance rendition of "Make 'Em Laugh" from Singin' in the Rain, Will's favorite movie to watch when he's sick.

Meanwhile Principal Sylvester, having taken over for a sick Figgins, wastes no time abusing her new power. She tries to cut the football team, and on a whim, bans tater tots from the school. This seems to have the biggest impact on Mercedes, who's losing her best friend, Kurt, to new guy Blaine. Kurt suggests that Mercedes is replacing love with food and tries to set her up with one of the football players, which Mercedes eventually agrees to.

At the end of the episode, Holly and Will have a heart to heart, resulting in Will taking his job back and promising to call on Holly whenever he's in need of a sub. The episode closes with New Directions, Mr. Schuester, and Ms. Holiday all coming together to perform a fun, albeit very wet, mash up of "Umbrella/Singin' in the Rain."
