Days after coming out as bisexual via a Twitter announcement, Aaron Carter is speaking out about what led him to come out and be open with his fans.
"To be honest, I've been thinking about it for many years," Carter explained during a visit to The Bert Show, People reports. "I just felt like it was something I needed to do."
"It was something that I just felt like was important and I needed to say. It was a part of a new chapter of turning 30 on December seventh this year," he continued.
Carter went on to reveal that, though he knew he was bisexual as early as 12, he didn't have a "small relationship" with a man until he was 17.
"The process is at your own pace and when you feel comfortable," Carter explained later. "There might be a lot of people who don’t agree with it, but you might be surprised by the people who do. I was shocked — I was blown away. My fans know that I'm a heart on the sleeve kinda guy. That's the way I am."
Shortly after his announcement, news emerged that Carter had parted ways with his then-girlfriend Madison Parker, a move he later revealed was prompted by discussion of his sexuality.
"I had discussed it with my ex-girlfriend, and she didn't really understand it and she didn't want [to]," he said. "And that was it! So we left it mutual and parted ways."
As for what's in store for the future? Aaron said he's "a single man."
"And whether I choose to be with a woman or a man is my decision," he added.
Amen to that.
