Acid Attack Survivor Models For Fashion Week
Acid attack survivor makes powerful statement at New York Fashion Week.
Reshma Qureshi is a true survivor. The 19-year-old, who survived a blinding and disfiguring acid attack, made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week on Thursday.
“I do feel brave... I feel really good and the experience was great,” she said to AFP reporters per The Guardian. She walked in designs by Archana Kochhar and reportedly received a rousing response.
Qureshi, who is from Mumbai, India was attacked in 2014 by her sister’s estranged husband and his friends. In a brutal assault, they held her down and drowned her face in acid. Since then, she has become outspoken against acid attacks--attacks meant to harm or kill someone, usually women, with acid--and preventing the sale of acid in India.
“Why should we not enjoy our lives? What happened to us is not our fault and we’ve done nothing wrong and so we should also move forward in life,” Qureshi said on behalf of herself and survivors before the show. “I want to tell the world – do not see us in a weak light and see that even we can go out and do things."
