Apple Is Replacing The Gun Emoji With A Water Pistol

People keep using the gun emoji for death threats.

Apple is replacing its black gun emoji with a green water gun. According to NPR, the pistol emoji has been considered controversial for some time and will be gone with the new iOS 10 update this fall.

Last year, a 12-year-old kid in Virginia was charged with a felony and fined for using the pistol image in an Instagram post that police claimed was a death threat, per NBC News. A Texas teen was arrested in 2015 for what was deemed an anti-cop tweet featuring the gun emoji, according to Texas Monthly.

The emoji swap is one of hundreds Apple plans to roll out. The company says that its iOS 10 will have "popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere." This includes new female athletes and professionals, new rainbow flag and more race and gender options.
