Last night, the Billboard Music Awards tribute to Prince featured Madonna, and fans are not happy about it. Madonna covered "Nothing Compares 2 U" and was joined by Stevie Wonder for "Purple Rain" for what was an underwhelming tribute to the icon.
Fans shared tweets of disapproval, including memes of how Prince may have responded (from Heaven) when he heard the tribute.
The BET Awards, which airs next month, took advantage of the situation by throwing shade of its own. According to US Weekly, the network immediately aired a teaser of its forthcoming tribute with the tagline: "Yeah, we saw that. Don't worry. We Got You."
Questlove of The Roots has come to Madonna's defense in light of the backlash. "Every Prince rendition will not be a life changing orgasmic xperience. Just to SING his work is brave enough," he tweeted. "Again feeling[s] are on high."
Lucky for fans, there are a slew of award shows coming, including the Grammys and NAACP Awards, which will likely feature Prince tributes.
