Muhiyidin d'Baha, a prominent leader of the Black Lives Matter movement in Charleston, South Carolina, was fatally shot in New Orleans on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old activist, whose legal name was Muhiyidin Elamin Moye, was riding his bicycle at around 1:25 a.m. when he was shot in the thigh, New Orleans police told the Advocate. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died from excessive blood loss.

Moye made headlines last year after he was arrested for trying to take a Confederate flag from a protestor during a live broadcast. His story spread on social media, and fellow activists were able to quickly raise the $2,000 to cover Moye's bail.

Following Moye's death, his niece Camille Weaver has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help cover funeral expenses, the New York Daily News reports. In less than two days, the campaign has far exceeded its original goal of $7,500, raising over $20k in Moye's honor.
