Dylann Roof was attacked and beaten yesterday by a black inmate in jail. The 22-year-old white inmate, who admitted to murdering nine African-American parishioners last year at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church, was locked up at Charleston County Detention Center at the time.
CNN reports that Roof was on the way to the shower when 25-year-old Dwayne Stafford assaulted him with his fists. According to the sheriff, "The detention officer responded quickly and separated the two. The injuries that Roof received are relatively minor — some bruising around the face and the back. It appears he was struck with a fist and nothing more serious than that."
Many on Twitter have publicly applauded Stafford, who is black, for beating up Roof. In addition to shouting him out, they're encouraging people to send him money.
Roof is charged with 33 federal offenses, including hate-crime charges. The massacre at the AME Church is considered to be racially-motivated. Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty and this week, his lawyers filed a legal challenge, calling the death penalty "arbitrary and cruel." They say Roof is willing to plead guilty and receive a sentence of life without parole.
