Back in November, indie band Sleigh Bells sent an accusatory tweet over to Demi Lovato after they noticed some completely apparent samples of two of their songs in her track "Stars." Nothing came of the warning for a while, but just yesterday the duo got serious and filed a suit against the pop singer.
Before we get to the legal details, here's the three songs side-by-side:
Here's "Infinity Guitars" and "Riot Rhythm" by Sleigh Bells:
And here's "Stars" by Lovato:
She wasn't even trying to hide it, now was she?
According to TMZ, Demi's producers responded to the tweet at the time, saying, "We did not use any samples in Demi Lovato's song Stars. Demi was also not involved with the production. She only wrote top line."
Now, Sleigh Bells is taking Lovato to court, claiming the bubblegum pop track features "virtually identical content" to their indie hit. "The combination of the hand claps and bass drum, structured as 3 quarter beats and a rest ... is at least substantially similar in both works," reads the suit.
No clue how this one will turn out.
