Prince Harry is getting married. The Prince of Wales announced his engagment to American actress Meghan Markle today. The 36-year-old Markle and 33-year-old prince—the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and fifth in line to the throne—have been dating for a year-and-a-half. Harry popped the question over a "cozy" night while trying to roast chicken in Kensington Palace. "It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee," she said. "As a matter of fact, I could barely let you finish proposing. I said, 'Can I say yes now?'"
From a whirlwind romance to a royal wedding, slated for next spring. Here's everything you need to know about Meghan Markle.
She's a Cali Girl
Meghan grew up in Los Angeles. Her mother, Doria Ragland, is a yoga instructor and clinical therapist, and her father, Thomas W. Markle, is an Emmy Award-winning lighting director. "My parents came from little so they made a choice to give a lot," she shared. "Buying turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving, delivering meals to people in hospices, giving spare change to those asking for it. It's what I grew up seeing, so it's what I grew up being: a young adult with a social consciousness to do what I could and speak up when I knew something was wrong."
Meghan is biracial. Her mother is black and her father is white. She's spoken out about her racial identity and how it affected her acting career. "Being 'ethnically ambiguous,' as I was pegged in the industry, meant I could audition for virtually any role," she told Elle UK. "Sadly, it didn't matter: I wasn't black enough for the black roles and I wasn't white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn't book a job."
She Went to Northwestern
Meghan graduated from Northwestern University and studied theater and international relations.
She's On A Hit TV Show
Meghan's breakthrough role as an actor came in 2011 when she first appeared as paralegal Rachel Zane in Suits.
She has had other roles including CSI: Miami, 90210 and the soap opera General Hospital as well as films like 2011's Horrible Bosses and 2010's Remember Me.
She's A Feminist
"I'm proud to be a woman and a feminist," said the actor in a speech at a United Nations conference on International Women's Day 2015.
She's A Humanitarian
Meghan is a proud humanitarian. In 2016, she became a global ambassador for World Vision and traveled to Rwanda to see the impact of clean water initiatives. "With fame comes opportunity," she shared in Elle UK. "But it also includes responsibility -- to advocate and share, to focus less on glass slippers and more on pushing through glass ceilings."
She's in Love
Markle was married to film producer Trevor Engelson for two years and they divorced in 2013. In July 2016, she first met Prince Harry through a mutual friend. "We're two people who are really happy and in love," she told Vanity Fair in September.
