Have you been wondering what Fiona Apple is up to lately? She’s still making music, of course, and like the rest of us she’s been watching the news with growing unease. Then actual terror. Then a kind of numbness (this has been my experience exactly). It seems Apple has moved on to the stage of grief where you write inflammatory protest songs set to Christmas music.
A Tumblr page called Fiona Apple Rocks shared a video of Apple singing her version of “Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire” (also known as "The Christmas Song") as a dog barks in the background. It has a new title, dedicated to Donald Trump.
If you want to sing it with your kids, the lyrics to “Trump's Nuts Roasting On An Open Fire” are as follows:
Trump's nuts roasting on an open fire/ As he keeps nipping at his foes/ You'll cry creepy uncle/ Every time he arrives/ For he keeps clawing at your clothes.
Everybody knows that money and entitlement/ Can help to make the season white/ Mothers of color with their kids out of sight/ Will find it hard to sleep at night.
They know that Trump is on his way/ He's got black boys in hoodies locked up on his sleigh/ And every working man is going to cry/ When they learn that Letch don't care how you live or if you die.
So I'm offering this simple phrase/ To kids from one to 92/ Although it's been said many times, many ways/ Merry Christmas to you.
The video culminates in Apple tearing up a picture of our president-elect. Ahhh, the power of art in difficult times.
