Billboard is in some pretty hot water, all thanks to an ill-thought-out tweet about Kim Kardashian and baby North West. While linking to a story about North requesting that the paparazzi stop taking pictures, they posted the caption: "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."
While at first glance it may seem like an innocuous enough comment, it's the picture they chose to accompany the tweet - a photo of North licking a lollipop while being held in her mother's arms - that took things to a problematic place.
While Billboard claims they were only attempting to draw comparisons between North and her parent's relationship with the paparazzi, to some it seemed they were making a tasteless allusion to Kim's sex tape past. And Twitter rightfully dragged them to hell and back for making such a vile joke about a toddler. Janet Mock called the tweet appalling and shameful, and later tweeted this:
Billboard later deleted the offensive tweet, replacing it with something that was less likely to be interpreted as sexualizing a minor: "North West is already pretty sassy (but in a cute way)." They also issued an apology via Twitter:
The damage has been done though, and many on Twitter don't believe the apology is genuine. What do you think?
