A decorated Muslim cop from the New York Police Department was harassed and verbally assaulted in Brooklyn. This weekend, the off-duty officer and her 16-year-old son were victims of a hate crime when a man yelled at her to “go back to your country."
According to the NY Daily News, Officer Aml Elsokary was wearing her hijab. She saw her son being shoved by a white man in his 30s and when she tried to stop him, he turned on her. “ISIS (expletive), I will cut your throat, go back to your country!”
Officer Elsokary has been celebrated as a hero in New York City. In April 2014, she saved an elderly man and baby. “Officer Elsokary was a hero long before that remarkable day,” said Mayor de Blasio in honor of her. “As both a Muslim and a native New Yorker, she knew she needed to get involved."
The suspect who harassed Elsokary fled the scene and has not been found.
