Hood By Air Debuts Entire Collection Inspired By "Empire"
Lyon tested, Cookie approved.
Underground fashion sensation Hood By Air has done plenty of outrageous things to get some much-desserved attention in the past. From holding vogue-inspired runway shows to having models walk with elaborate spiked mouthguards -- the newly burgeoning powerhouse has had magazines and commentators gagging on street-smart eleganza for the past few years.
Shayne Oliver, the head designer of the hip-hop influenced brand, clearly has more eye-catching surprises in store for us. In his latest collection, Oliver has teamed up with the makers of Empire for looks that both Cookie and Lyon would surely approve. The new clothes are the first official pieces of Empire merchandise available to the public.
“A lot of it is also references to things I grew up with, that are very specific to Queens,” Oliver said to Vogue. “All the boys in the oversized Hot 97 Summer Jam tees, all the West Indian girls in the printed Gallianos and Moschinos.”
The clothes themselves have the faces of Cookie and her son Hakeen emblazoned upon them, and Oliver hasn't been shy about discussing his adoration for Lee Daniels' creations: “[Cookie] reminds me of the Dynasty chicks, who have always been a huge reference," he said. "Or Lil’ Kim—who came as hard as the guys in this very feminine way. Like, ‘I’m going to give you these hood aesthetics in this really glamorous way.’ I think glamour is coming back!”
The Hood By Air X Empire collection is currently on sale over on HBA's website.
