I Went To 3 Top Psychics And Asked Them About My Love Life. Should You?

Everybody's doing it. Even J-Lo.

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy
Tarot Card Reading

Jennifer Lopez turns to one for career advice, Cameron Diaz asks hers about love. Angelina Jolie uses one to contact her late mother. What do these A-list celebrities have in common? They all turn to psychics to answer life’s big questions. Like a coveted Birkin bag, psychics are the hottest, must-have accessory in Hollywood, and increasingly, women of all walks of life are turning to a higher power for guidance.

Every psychic has a different method—some use tarot cards for example-- but essentially, they tap into supernatural energy. Some psychics say they hear messages, while others visually see things. Mediums also specialize in communicating with people who have died (or “crossed over”) and relaying messages from beyond. Personally, I’ve always been fascinated with the supernatural. Whether it was rocking mood rings, playing Ouija board or attempting magic tricks, mysticism and paranormal activity has intrigued me since childhood. As an adult, I no longer try to fly like David Copperfield but I’ll still scroll through my horoscope on Astrology Zone or The Astro Twins and call my psychic, Sandra Logan, a few times a year.

I know you skeptics are rolling your eyes. Psychics often get a bad rap for being frauds that prey on the desperate. Living in New York City, there’s a sidewalk fortuneteller and palm reader on every block. There are countless cases of psychic scams. Remember The Psychic Friends Network or Ms. Cleo? A bunch of vague, generic answers aimed at the gullible for $4.99/minute. Even famous psychics and mediums like Theresa Caputo and John Edward have been accused of using so-called “cold readings” (making predictions based upon body language and guesses) versus actual abilities.

So, should YOU see a psychic? I asked three top psychics for readings. Here’s what happened:

1. Vanessa Facciola

Medium, Tarot Expert, Psychic at the Warren-Tricomi Salon in New York

Rate: $100 for 30 minutes (in person or phone)

Vanessa Facciola combines two things we love: hair and psychic readings. Working out of the Warren-Tricomi Salon, you can get your blow-out and life clarity from Vanessa in the same day. She has over 30 years of experience and specializes in tarot cards.

She learned about her psychic gifts as a child and received training to hone her skills.

Clients: Vanessa reads clients of Warren-Tricomi and the successful salon’s owner too. She has worked with a variety of media and brand clients including Givenchy, Revlon, Oprah Magazine, Lord & Taylor and Cosmopolitan magazine.

The Reading: I sat down with Vanessa on a couch at The Plaza. She pulled out a deck of dog-eared tarot cards and began shuffling. She then prompted me to ask her a series of questions, such as “Who is my soulmate?” and “Should I move to Los Angeles?” and let the cards guide her response. I tried to keep a poker face so as not to give away any information. Vanessa’s demeanor is approachable and pleasant but she assured me that she doesn’t shy away from harsh truths. For instance, she had to tell one client that her husband was cheating on her. Luckily, she said that I’m psychically “protected,” and my reading was overall positive.

Her Predictions: I specifically wanted to ask Vanessa about love and career. According to her, I will date three guys before finally meeting my husband. From her description, he sounds like a salt-and-pepper fox similar to Anthony Bourdain (Woo!). I will have two or three kids and live in New York City. She predicts that I will be professionally successful and even write a book.

Mind-Blowing Moment: I wanted Vanessa to focus her powers on a specific dude (we’ll call him McDreamy for this article). She said that I can “have him if I want him” romantically and that I would see him on a day with the number “3.” Drum roll…WE DID MEET UP on a day starting with a “3” a few weeks later!

2. Thomas John

Celebrity Psychic, Medium in New York City and Los Angeles

Rate: $1000 for emergency appointment

$175 for 30 minutes (1-year wait list)

Thomas John is one of Hollywood’s hottest psychics and mediums. The bicoastal reader is so in-demand that the wait list for a reading is currently over a year!

Clients: Thomas John is said to have worked with J. Lo, Courtney Love and the Real Housewives of New York City along with Hollywood industry notables like writer Merle Ginsberg. He’s been in featured in media and TV outlets including New York Magazine, People and Entertainment Tonight.

The Reading:

Thomas called me at 7:45am for our reading. He asked me for a specific area to focus his energy on (I said love) and he started giving information. He said that, based upon the messages he receives, he may veer into other aspects beyond the focus. He asked fewer questions to me in comparison to Vanessa, and did so mostly to confirm whether what he’s seeing is accurate. Although a phone reading decreased the personal connection compared to an in-person, I didn't have to worry that my facial expressions or body language was giving away clues or details.

My Predictions: Thomas foresaw me getting married in my early 30s and having two kids. He doesn’t see the salt-and-pepper stud that Vanessa predicts for me but says my soulmate will be “tall.” Thank God! During the reading, Thomas moved into career and said that he sees me doing more hosting work on television. He also saw more money coming in to my bank account (Ka-ching!)

Mind-Blowing Moment: Right off the bat, Thomas correctly predicted the first two initials of McDreamy. He also made predictions about my brother and his wife (including the letters in their first names). If you know anything about complicated Indian names, you’ll know this is very impressive.

3.  Sandra Logan

Psychic, Medium in Houston, Texas

http://sandralogan.org

Rate: $65 for 30 minutes

Psychics exist all over the country—not just New York City and Los Angeles. One of my friends is a radio host in Houston, and she referred me to Sandra Logan. I’ve only spoken to her on the phone but locals can see her in-person too.

Clients: Sandra probably has the most hip hop of clientele of the three. She does monthly appearances on Houston’s Hot Show 95.7 radio and has read for Grammy Award winners Play-N-Skillz (who have produced for the likes of Lil Wayne and Chamillionaire) as well as DJ Crisco Kidd. She’s been featured on Fox, Texas Monthly and New York Times.

The Reading:

Calling Sandra is like talking to your sweet grandma. She has the most adorable Southern accent and always starts the reading by telling me about the weather or something going on in her neck of the woods. Her style is more call-and-response than Thomas. I ask her specific questions and then she answers them. “Does that make sense?” she’ll ask when she gets a specific message, and based on my answer, she’ll either continue to clarify. She’s spiritual and believes in practices like gratitude. I called her once to whine about something and she basically told me to relax and focus on the positives. Sometimes you need that zen check back into reality.

My Predictions: Sandra has read me about five or six times over the past three years. She’s accurately predicted that I would work with a specific TV network and sadly, how a breakup would end (“He doesn’t want to be your friend.”) Like Thomas and Vanessa, she predicts television hosting and marriage in my future and ultimately, she says I’ll live a “fairytale” life. Given the number of frogs I’ve kissed, sounds good to me!

Mind-Blowing Moment: One of Sandra’s strangest predictions was earlier in the year, when she said I’d go to Africa (a continent I’ve never been to) to work with women. Fast forward, I was invited to a music conference in South Africa on the topic of women in entertainment.

From my experiences, I love psychics. Like a personal trainer or hairstylist, I consider psychics a luxury resource that provide guidance and clarity. At the very least, they offer an unbiased and understanding ear (without having to lay on a therapist’s couch every week!). Oftentimes, we’re so wrapped up in our own heads, that we need a third-party to talk us off the proverbial edge and to tell us that everything will be okay.

But like a good trainer or stylist, there’s no one-size-fits-all. Find a psychic whose personality and style you vibe with and with whom you can openly share information. Try out a few before deciding on one. Many psychics feature reviews on their websites and a Yelp search can find negative reviews too. Do your research.

In my case, three separate psychics from three different cities predicted mostly similar things for me:  working in television, marrying a tall guy, having kids one day. Still, I take every reading as just that—an opinion. The same way you filter your best friend, boyfriend and mama’s opinions, treat a psychic reading accordingly. Just because a psychic tells you to quit your dream job doesn’t mean you have to. A good psychic reading should leave you empowered and energized. You still have ultimate control of your life.
