Justin Bieber Almost Took $5 Mil To Perform At Republican National Convention
Scooter threatened to drop Justin as a client if he went through with the show.
It's always a mixed bag with Justin Bieber. While reports from just yesterday suggested that the totally masc singer refused to participate in a gay sex scene in an upcoming film, a counter-narrative about the Biebs' possible progressivism has sprung up today: turns out Justin may have turned down a $5 million offer from Republicans to perform at their National Convention.
While Bieber's political proclivities have always leaned slightly right (in an interview years ago he talked about being anti-choice), perhaps the star is changing with a little help from his friends. According to TMZ, Justin was ready to accept the huge offer from GOP donors until his manager, Scooter Braun, convinced him out of it: "Scooter wasn't heavy-handed at first, and talked to Justin about putting Black Lives Matter banners up in the venue. We're told Braun was told he could not display BLM banners, but the donors would accept banners that read 'All Lives Matter.'"
Despite insistence from Republicans that the event would not be a political one (what?!), they also barred Bieber from making any anti-Trump statements during the show. Scooter eventually threatened to stop representing Justin if he went through with the proposal.
Bieber's crew also apparently was in communication with LeBron James, who was also offered considerable cash-money to appear at the convention. James ultimately urged Justin to turn down the right-wingers as well.
Similarly, Justin's backing band (comprised entirely of African-Americans) expressed their desire to not perform for that audience.
The five milly would have been Justin's “single biggest payday ever,” but the boy wonder ultimately decided against it.
Is Justin actively becoming more liberal, or was he just scared of losing his manager and friends? Who knows! Either way, we're only slightly sad to have not been able to see gaggles of old, out of touch white dudes attempting to dance to "Sorry." What a sight that would have been! (Ew.)
