Katy Perry Debuted Olympic Anthem "Rise" On TODAY
"Let's be inspired. Let's heal. Let's unite and rise."
The whole world is clamoring for glory with the 2016 Summer Olympics approaching, and pop queen Katy Perry is here to provide the soundtrack. The candy-coated singer's latest track "Rise" celebrates the unifying power of the global event.
"I was inspired to finish it now rather than save it for (my upcoming) album because of the overall mood of the world today," she said on TODAY. "Now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite. I know that together we can rise above the fear — in our country, and around the world."
"I can't think of a better example coming up than the Olympic athletes, as they gather together in Rio with their strength and fearlessness to remind us how we all can come together with the resolve to be the best we can be," she continued. "Let's be inspired. Let's heal. Let's unite and rise."
Belting power notes over trap-influenced snares, the song's content marks a more serious turn for the famously sugary superstar. The new track is also peppered with samples of great victories from Olympics past.
The Olympics officially begin on August 5th and will be airing on NBC.
