Laverne Cox To Make History In Upcoming Legal Drama, 'Doubt'
She'll be the first transgender actress to act in a transgender role in a broadcast series.
The upcoming CBS legal drama, Doubt, has Katherine Heigl finding herself in an unfortunate romantic situation, as is her general wont. The story, which is certainly darker than standard Heigl fare, has her staunch lawyer character falling in love with an alleged murderer she is set to defend. But the real story isn't Heigl: it's Laverne Cox.
According to Out, Cox will "make history as the first transgender actress to act in a transgender role in a broadcast series." Her character, Cameron Wirth, has been described by CBS as "fierce and funny" and "as competitive as she is compassionate." Sounds right up Laverne's alley!
You can watch the trailer for the new series over on Entertainment Weekly.
Here's Laverne talking about the role on the red carpet:
But Cox will be doing more than just vamping in the background. At a session with the Television Critics Association, Laverne spoke about the complexities of the upcoming part and hinted that her character will come face to face with anti-trans violence. She'll also be given her own love interest that she said "I think people will be interested in."
Doubt is set to debut on CBS this Fall.
