CoverGirl continues to dominate inclusion in beauty. Following its announcement of its first male face, the cosmetic giant reveals its latest ambassador is a Muslim beauty blogger wearing a hijab.
Nura Afia is a 23-year-old of Lebanese and Moroccan descent and she's garnered a significant following for her YouTube videos for over five years. "I [grew] up being insecure about wearing the hijab, [and] I never thought I would see Muslim women represented on such a large scale," she tells Refinery29. "I hope [this campaign] will show Muslim women that brands care about us as consumers and we're important, especially hijabis. [We] can be featured on TV, [we] can be featured on billboards in Times Square. [We] can be represented."
Afia is also a mom and hopes her story will help break stereotypes down for her daughter. "I’m doing this because I want there to be a time when my daughter grows up when she knows she can be anything she wants to be. It doesn’t matter what her beliefs are or what she looks like."
She will be featured as part of the brand's So Lashy campaign.
