Misty Copeland On Breaking Race Barriers, Getting Engaged
Is there anything this talented trailblazer can't do?
We love Misty Copeland. Seriously, is there anything this talented trailblazer can’t do? The 33-year-old spoke to The View about her career as a ballet prodigy and becoming the first African-American Female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre.
As a kid, she was so focused on dance that she didn’t realize how rare her talent was. “I didn’t realize how rare it was to be black in the classical ballet world.” She says that as an adult, her race became much more apparent. “Oh my gosh. I’m alone. There were a lot of obstacles.”
She’s danced several roles at the American Ballet Theatre that no other black woman has ever done, including Swan Lake and The Firebird Suite.
“It’s a huge feat. It’s incredible to be seen as the ballerina and to be brown and to set the example for so many young dancers.”
The gorgeous Misty is newly-engaged to longtime boyfriend Olu Evans, who happens to be Taye Diggs’ cousin. She says they don’t have a date but plan on getting hitched next summer. Despite her glamorous onstage costumes, Misty isn’t planning for a grand wedding. “I’ve never been one of those girly girls,” she says. “I’m just like, let’s keep it simple. I’m busy.”
