Taco Bell just upped the taco ante. The fast food chain is updating its popular chalupa by wrapping it completely in fried chicken. Meet the Naked Chicken Chalupa.
The taco features four ounces of "marinated, all-white-meat, antibiotic-free chicken" with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and avocado ranch all wrapped in a piece of fried chicken, reports USA Today. It will cost $2.99. The chalupa was tested in Bakersfield, California and Kansas City, Missouri and arrives nationwide on January 26.
"Something this delicious yet different is bound to ruffle some feathers," says Marisa Thalberg, Taco Bell's chief marketing officer. "We feel confident that once our fans get a taste of the Naked Chicken Chalupa they are going to understand exactly why this is our next big, fun and crave-able innovation."
Taco Bell has had success with strange tacos in the past. Its Doritos Locos Taco, wrapped in a nacho cheese-flavored shell, has proved to be a billion-dollar win. Other restaurants have tried to repurpose fried chicken before. In 2010, Kentucky Fried Chicken launched the Double Down sandwich which failed to take off.
