Plus-Size Women Are Posting Body Positive Selfies
Simone Mariposa wants women of all shapes to love their size. The 23-year-old plus-size model and blogger has created a body positive movement on Twitter, encouraging women to proudly wear whatever they want.
She tells BuzzFeed News that she started the hashtag #WeWearWhatWeWant after seeing that a plus-size girl was bullied and made to feel "uncomfortable" for her fashion. It was a feeling the blogger knew well.
“The fat woman’s experience is rarely addressed and discussed, because we are often stripped of our humanity," she says. She explains, being plus-size, “my body image suffered greatly from it. I stopped wearing my legs and arms out, I stayed away from clothes that accentuated my belly fat, and I was extremely self conscious [in] public." Eventually she got over her fears and wants to help others do the same. “However, after a while, I stopped letting society dictate my wardrobe, and started wearing things that I always dreamed of wearing that made me feel beautiful.”
Mariposa's hashtag is meant to “highlight plus-size girls making unconventional fashion choices, and looking amazing while [making them]."
