A Teen Is Accused Of Livestreaming Her Friend's Rape On Periscope
If convicted, she and her accomplice could be facing serious prison time.
In a truly disturbing use of social media, an Ohio teenager allegedly used Periscope to livestream her friend's rape.
18 year-old Marina Lonina stands accused of filming the rape of her 17 year-old friend, Associated Press reports. While at a private residence in Columbus, Ohio on Feb. 27, Lonina's co-defendant, 29-year-old Raymond Gates, began to assault the 17-year-old friend, at which point Lonina began to film the attack, livestreaming it on Periscope.
Lonina and Gates have been charged with rape, kidnapping, sexual battery and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, with Lonina also being charged with the illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material for taking nude photos of her friend the night before and posting them to the app. Lonina has denied the latter charge.
The authorities were contacted after a mutual friend saw the images online and reported it. If convicted, both Lonina and Gate could face up to 40 years in prison.
"People need to know and understand that the use of a smartphone to video events can constitute serious felony crimes," Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said in an interview with the Associated Press. "They should think twice before they use their smartphones to either photograph or video anything that's of a sexual nature."
