The 5 Stages of Crime TV Addiction
Go ahead. Dive in. You know you want to.
Crime TV. It’s dark, twisted and gory…and you know you love it. There’s nothing better than cozying up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and glass of wine to watchotherpeople’s drama. Whether you’re an all-out fan or a closet junkie (We don’t judge!), you know these stages of watching crime TV. And don't miss the new series Snapped: She Made Me Do It, premiering Wednesday at 10/9c on Oxygen!
When you first start watching crime TV, you tell yourself… It’s just entertainment! Yes, you’re watching something dramatic (and melodram>atic) and outrageous but you could totally turn it off at any time. Right?
2. Full Blown Addiction.
It’s been hours and you haven’t moved off the couch. Your eyes hurt from being glued to the television. You’ve ordered every meal on Seamless. Now, you’re surrounded by remnants of Moo Goo Gai Pain and cold French Fries. What day is it?
After about the fifth straight hour, television and reality become one and the same. You start to have nightmares about the show or worse, you empathize with the killer. She’s just misunderstood! You would have snapped too if dude did you wrong like that. You’re delusional and delving into the darkest parts of the soul. Things get creepy when you start thinking like the killer. Ignore the voices in your head. Hmm would you have done it? Maybe. Only you wouldn’t have gotten caught.
OMG! Did I really think that? Out loud? Guilt starts to set in right about now. How could you let yourself unravel like this? You’re a total, psychotic mess. Did you forget you have a job? Bad. Bad. Bad.
The final stage: Acceptance. Okay, you’re addicted to crime TV. You can’t stop at one episode. You’ve alienated your friends and family and worn the same pajamas for days on end. You’re not sure if you’re sane or a killer. Maybe both. So what? You are who you are. Now be quiet! Another episode is on.
