The First Black Woman Comic Book Shop Owner Gets A Marvel Cover
Arielle Johnson just became our superhero. The 33-year-old was already pretty awesome as the first black woman to have her own comic book shop. Now, she's landed her own Marvel comic book cover.
According to Huffington Post, Johnson owns and runs Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse in Philly. You can see her gorgeous face on on a variant cover for Marvel’s “Invincible Iron Man #1.” She shares the honor with fictional character RiRi Williams, the black, teenage super genius who is the new Iron Man.
“I knew what it was supposed to look like,” Johnson tells ABC News, “But having the actual art in front of you is so much different. It’s really exciting.”
The cover was conceived when Marvel sent out an email asking for ideas and Johnson's colleague, Randy Green, petitioned for her.
“When you are a person of color, you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel to find someone you can identify with," she explains. "I always felt like I was watching other people’s adventures.”
Now we're watching her adventures!
