The First Same-Sex Tango On 'Dancing With The Stars' Happened Last Night And It Was Glorious
Nyle DiMarco, a deaf, sexually fluid, ridiculously good-looking man made history last night.
The perpetual schmaltz-fest known as Dancing With The Stars finally produced something worthy of attention (aside from that one time they executed an almost terrifyingly campy Cher tribute) last night. Nyle DiMarco, the deaf, sexually-fluid, impossibly good-looking winner of the final season of America's Next Top Model, danced the tango with another dude.
In a show otherwise almost entirely dependent on traditional gender roles expressed through the medium of dance, the uncannily handsome Nyle performed a tango with partner Keo Motsepe. The ladies also had a chance to show off some same-sex sensuality with Peta Murgatroyd and actress Jodie Sweetin performing a similarly satisfying (but disappointingly short) sapphic number.
Nyle himself deserves praise for this: already breaking barriers on the show by proving that deafness doesn't disable a person from having sweet moves, it's not hard to imagine that the model who has already come out as queer was behind (or, at the very least, not opposed) to the idea of a homoerotic routine.
Commenting on the routine, DiMarco had this to say: "Well, it’s a different experience. Usually I’m lifting Peta but… should it only be for a woman? Maybe Peta can lift me at some stage?”
This is the first time DWTS has broken from their heteronormative formula, and considering the media attention and praise the performance is getting, it might not be the last.
