The Internet Is Angry About This Totally Sexist Olympic Media Fail
Corey Cogdell-Unrein, a two-time bronze winning trap shooter, is just some dude's wife apparently.
Corey Cogdell-Unrein won big at the Olympics, but the sexist media doesn't seem to care. The Chicago Tribune congratulated the athlete on her second bronze medal in women’s trap shooting by referring to her marital status: “Corey Cogdell, wife of Bears lineman Mitch Unrein, wins bronze in Rio.”
As Jezebel notes, the newspaper seemed more concerned with Corey's football player husband than her huge win: "This is Cogdell-Unrein’s third Olympic games, but Unrein, a defensive end in his second season with the Bears, was unable to get away from training camp to join her in Rio and see her in the Olympics for the first time. The Bears open their preseason schedule Thursday against the Broncos at Soldier Field.”
Twitter was not happy and many women are speaking out about the sexist write-up.
Of course, the Bears are a big deal in Chicago and this may have been a way to get clicks from local sports fans -- but any decent editor should be able to see how gross this looks.
