Gigi Gorgeous is a YouTube personality who does a lot of beauty blogs and also posts about her transition. She was born Gregory Lazzarato, but says she has officially changed her name to Gigi Loren on her passport. While Gigi says that she had known she was transgender for years, she came out on YouTube in 2001 after her mom passed away.
On Tuesday, Gigi posted about traveling somewhere exciting on Instagram.
It turns out that place was Dubai, and it was exciting in all the wrong ways. Dubai has made the “imitation of women by men” illegal, which means they don’t recognize transgender people’s gender identities. Gigi claims everything was in order with her passport, but officials confiscated it and detained her at the airport.
A bit later, Gigi posted that she had been rescued, and is flying somewhere she will be accepted -- though it’s unclear if she means home or a nearby country.
"After being detained and held at the Dubai airport for over 5 hours, this was the moment my baby came to rescue me. Yesterday was one of the scariest moments of my entire life and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. How you can be denied entry somewhere just because of who you are is seriously disgusting and also very scary. This further proves the need for CHANGE. I am now on my way to somewhere much more accepting. Safe and sound and happy. I love you guys."
Transgender people continue to face discrimination all over the world, and Gigi’s experience is a stark reminder of where that kind of bigotry can lead. Glad to hear she is safe and sound.
