It was the call-out heard round the world. When Nicki Minaj took to the stage during the VMAs last night to accept her award for Best Hip Hop Video, no one expected what came next. After Nicki sweetly thanked her fans and even her pastor for their support, she takes a brief pause and turns toward Miley, and that's when things really start to get interesting. Check out the video below.
Nicki is, of course, referring to Miley mouthing off in the New York Times and claiming that Nicki's opinions about racism in the entertainment industry were really just about her wanting an award.
Though some speculate that Nicki was joking, or that it was scripted, the anger on her face looks pretty authentic in the clip. Things start to look even more real when you consider that Nicki was still talking and looking pretty pissed when MTV cut her mic.
Perhaps most convincingly, there's footage floating around of Miley, off-camera, during the call-out. The way her face completely drops is something to behold, and it definitely doesn't look like she was acting. See for yourself.
Still, some are claiming that the whole thing was either entirely scripted, or a joke on Nicki's part, since she seems to be smiling when the camera first cuts to Miley.
A source at MTV claims that what happened wasn't scripted, even though some news outlets have speculated that their response - an Instagram post featuring pictures of Miley and Nicki with literal beef in the background - went up pretty darn quickly.
Was it real? Was it fake? The world may never know. One thing we do know? Nicki seems over it already.
