Women Are So Over Loose, Shapeless Maternity Clothes
Here's why new mamas wanna flaunt the baby bump!
The hottest fashion statement in maternity wear? The bump. Pregnant women are over loose and shapeless maternity outfits and they're clamoring for fitted, bump-hugging style.
According to the NY Times, the fashion industry is trying to keep up with this shift in pregnancy fashion. “Now we see shoppers, maternity shoppers, who also say, ‘You know, I’m showing off my body. I don’t have to hide it, so I want it to be a fashion statement,’” says Wendy Liebmann, the chief executive at WSL Strategic Retail, a consulting firm.
No longer is there pressure to hide a baby bump or pregnancy weight gain. Mamas-to-be want to be stylish. Following celebrities like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian, it's all about highlighting the bun in the oven.
Young mamas, especially, are showing off their growing belly. “The millennials really like to show off the belly,” says Anthony M. Romano, chief executive of Destination Maternity. “The funny phrase that people use around here all the time is, 'is it gummy?' Is it soft enough, is it stretch enough?”
